LASC: SUPERIOR COURT OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY PRESIDING JUDGE SAMANTHA P. JESSNER CONGRATULATES JUDGE ANNE HWANG ON HER CONFIRMATION TO U.S. DISTRICT COURT FOR THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA
Today, Superior Court of Los Angeles County Presiding Judge Samantha P. Jessner released the following statement on the confirmation of Judge Anne Hwang to the United States District Court for the Central District of California:
“We congratulate Judge Hwang on her confirmation to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California,” Presiding Judge Jessner said. “Her career is marked by service – service to the Court’s Criminal and Civil divisions, service on several of the Court’s committees, and service to the next generation of legal professionals through her mentorship of young students. The U.S. District Court will benefit immensely from Judge Hwang’s service-minded approach to the bench as well as her expertise and commitment to justice.”
Judge Hwang’s judicial career began in 2019, following her appointment to the Court by former California Governor Jerry Brown in 2018. From January 2019 to July 2023, Judge Hwang was assigned to the Criminal Division, where she presided over approximately 100 traffic infraction bench trials and over approximately 30 jury trials in criminal misdemeanor matters. In July 2023, Judge Hwang was reassigned to the Civil Division, where she presided over cases involving personal injury claims before the cases reach trial, handling pleadings and service of summons, discovery, additional pre-trial motions, dispositive motions and settlement.
Off the bench, Judge Hwang has also served on several of the Court’s committees, including its Technology Committee, Trial Jurors Committee, Community Outreach Committee and Rules Committee.
Prior to becoming a judge, Judge Hwang worked for the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of California from 2006 to 2018. She initially served as Deputy Federal Public Defender followed by Supervising Deputy Federal Public Defender, Los Angeles Trial Chief Deputy Federal Public Defender and ultimately Chief Deputy Federal Public Defender.
Among her honors and awards, Judge Hwang has received the Asian Pacific American Bar Association’s Trailblazer-in-the-Law Award. She has also mentored law students and visited law school classes as a guest speaker to discuss professional responsibility, criminal procedure and trial advocacy.
Judge Hwang earned her undergraduate degree at Cornell University and her juris doctor degree from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.
