PRESIDING JUDGE SAMANTHA P. JESSNER, ASSISTANT PRESIDING JUDGE SERGIO TAPIA II, AND JUDGE ESTHER P. KIM TO PROVIDE PERSPECTIVES FROM THE BENCH DURING IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING ON OCTOBER 3
Presiding Judge Samantha P. Jessner, Assistant Presiding Judge Sergio Tapia II and Judge Esther P. Kim, Chair of the Court’s Anti-Bias Committee, will be panelists next month for the “Joint Implicit Bias Training with Perspectives from the Bench” MCLE webinar.
Conducted by consultants Carol Ross-Burnett and Camille Gear Rich, the free 2-hour program is certified for 2.0 hours of Elimination of Bias credit. The program will focus on implicit bias based on gender identity, mental health, race and disability. This training will encourage reflection and continued dialogue about implicit bias, microaggressions and other forms of bias experienced in legal proceedings in and outside the courtroom. Developed for plaintiff and defense counsel, the training will include discussion of real-life scenarios to demonstrate both individual bias and systemic bias in courtroom and legal settings and the successful adoption of bias “interrupters” during such scenarios. The presentation will also include perspectives from the bench.
CAALA President Minh Nguyen, ABOTA Immediate Past President Deborah Chang and ASCDC Board Member Laura Hummasti will join the judges on the panel.
