Court Notice

LASC: SUPERIOR COURT OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY TO EXPAND DIGITAL EVIDENCE SYSTEM TO ALL SMALL CLAIMS COURTROOMS BEGINNING MONDAY, MARCH 3

The Digital Evidence System Will be Available in All 12 Small Claims Courthouses Following Successful Pilot

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County will expand its Digital Evidence System to 10 remaining Small Claims courthouses beginning Monday, March 3, following a successful pilot that launched in select courtrooms last September. The Court’s Digital Evidence System allows litigants to upload and share digital evidence instead of exchanging physical copies, improving efficiency and streamlining the court experience for Small Claims litigants.

Litigants in Small Claims cases are required to exchange evidence in advance of their hearings. Traditionally, litigants have produced and mailed physical copies to the Court and to the opposing side. Litigants may still choose to share physical copies of evidence, but the expansion of the Digital Evidence System will allow them to electronically exchange evidence directly within the system from anywhere by using a stable internet connection or by using a scanner and kiosk at any Small Claims courthouse.

The Digital Evidence System allows litigants to upload evidence in a variety of file formats, including documents, photos and video to share, view or present at hearings. The evidence is securely stored and assigned a unique number for easy reference, eliminating the need to bring hard copies to the Court.

Evidence must be uploaded and shared with the opposing party and the Court at least 10 days prior to a hearing. Litigants with Small Claims matters will be able to create an account and begin uploading evidence on Monday, March 3, making it available for any Small Claims hearing scheduled on or after March 14.

The Digital Evidence System launched as a pilot last fall at the Compton and Beverly Hills courthouses. It will expand to the remaining Small Claims courthouses:

  • Bellflower Courthouse
  • Chatsworth Courthouse
  • Governor George Deukmejian (Long Beach) Courthouse
  • Inglewood Courthouse
  • Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse
  • Pasadena Courthouse
  • Santa Monica Courthouse
  • Stanley Mosk Courthouse
  • Van Nuys Courthouse East
  • West Covina Courthouse

Litigants will be informed of the system’s expanded capability via notice from the Court at the time of filing. Additional information about how to use the Digital Evidence System, answers to frequently asked questions and technical requirements, is available at www.LACourt.org/DigitalEvidence. The Court will continue to use data and feedback in an ongoing effort to expand the Digital Evidence System to additional case types.
