LASC: SUPERIOR COURT BEGINS IMPLEMENTATION OF MODERNIZED COURTROOM TECHNOLOGY

Enhanced Courtroom Technology Benefitting Litigants and Attorneys Will Initially Begin in Over 50 Courtrooms Throughout Los Angeles County

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County has begun the installation of modernized courtroom technology in select courtrooms that will feature large, 85-inch screens to display high-quality images, new microphone units and a seamless way for attorneys and self-represented litigants to easily share content from their computers or mobile devices to the courtroom, Presiding Judge Samantha P. Jessner announced today.

“Having access to effective, modern courtroom technology is instrumental to the Court’s mission of providing efficient and timely access to justice,” Presiding Judge Jessner said. “We are dedicated to ensuring that every courtroom is equipped with the latest technology to provide attorneys and self-represented litigants with quality tools at their fingertips to seamlessly see, show and share evidence. The technology also enhances the Court’s ability to provide the highest quality remote and hybrid court appearances, permitting litigants and attorneys to choose the best option of appearing for hearings.”

The upgrades have been installed and are now operating in courtrooms at the Van Nuys East Courthouse, Pasadena Courthouse, Chatsworth Courthouse and Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Courthouse. The modernized courtroom technology package will be installed in additional courtrooms through a phased rollout, with anticipated completion by the fall of 2026. In the modernized courtrooms, attorneys and self-represented litigants have access to the following:

  • One to two 85-inch display screens for use in virtual hearings and to share documents in the courtroom.
  • Ultra-high-definition cameras to support enhanced video quality for remote participants.
  • Monitors with touch and annotation capability located on counsel tables. An additional monitor is located at the witness stand. Annotations allow for counsel, self-represented litigants or a witness to highlight, underline or circle information on display.
  • Microphone and speaker units with push-to-mute capabilities located on counsel tables. Additional high-quality microphone and speaker units are available for judicial officers, witnesses, and court staff within the courtrooms.
  • A document camera allows for documents or objects to be projected on all courtroom screens.

Attorneys and self-represented litigants may also share content with the courtroom from their external devices by connecting the Court’s HDMI cable to their computer. The judicial officer will preview the content before allowing it to be shared in the courtroom.

The Court also allows screen sharing from mobile devices. Attorneys and self-represented litigants may connect to the Court’s Wi-Fi with a password provided by the judicial assistant. When sharing content from a phone, the judicial officer will preview the content before allowing the content to be shared in the courtroom.
